Underwater Noise Modelling in Baltic Sea

Irwin Carr Consulting is delighted to be supporting underwater noise modelling for a geophysical survey in the South Baltic Sea, commissioned by MMT, an Ocean Infinity company.

The project forms part of Equinor’s ongoing programme to responsibly develop offshore renewable energy while protecting marine biodiversity. The survey will provide critical seabed and sub-seabed information to inform the design and construction of a proposed offshore wind farm.

Our team undertook detailed underwater noise modelling for the survey equipment, including multibeam echosounders, sub-bottom profilers (sparkers and chirpers), and positioning systems. The assessment considered sound emissions across a broad frequency range from 10 Hz to 160 kHz.

Working alongside EDR, we evaluated the potential acoustic effects on marine mammals and contributed to the development of the project’s Marine Mammal Mitigation Plan, helping to ensure that survey activities are undertaken in an environmentally responsible manner.

We are proud to play a role in supporting sustainable offshore wind development in the Baltic Sea while helping clients meet environmental and regulatory requirements.
